This paper reviews the latest progress in the field of PG 1159 star research since the most recent review given at the European White Dwarf workshop in Kiel 1994 (Dreizler etal 1995a). Many new results for PG ,1159 stars emerge from space based observatories (HST, HUT, ROSAT, EUVE, IUE) but also from refined ground-based spectroscopy and imagery. In combination with the rapid progress with analyses of related H-deficient post-AGB stars (Wolf-Rayet central stars, helium-rich white dwarfs) we obtain a more coherent picture of the post-AGB evolution of hot H-deficient objects. Yet, the basic question about the origin of the hydrogen deficiency remains unanswered.
